COURSE OVERVIEW

Biostratigraphy is commonly employed as a service in petroleum exploration and development for age dating and paleoenvironmental analysis. It plays a crucial role in providing insights for detailed sequence stratigraphy, including the identification of unconformities, sedimentation gaps, flooding surfaces, and condensed sequences. Additionally, biostratigraphy helps in the characterization of sedimentary facies in both reservoir and non-reservoir intervals. The most effective use of biostratigraphy occurs when its data is integrated with seismic, sedimentological, and petrographical interpretations. This course will demonstrate the main fossil groups used in biostratigraphy, highlighting their temporal and spatial distribution with various examples. Potential challenges and limitations of biostratigraphy will be discussed, particularly in relation to the geological settings where sediments are deposited. The course will cover practical applications of biostratigraphy in both exploration and development, with examples from different basins around the World.
