COURSE OVERVIEW

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills required to drill safely and efficiently in formations with a narrow mud weight window, where conventional drilling methods are often inadequate. The course covers advanced techniques and technologies applicable to both onshore and offshore drilling and cementing operations. Key topics include Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD), Controlled Mud Level (CML) systems, and Riserless Mud Recovery (RMR) for top-hole sections. These technologies enable operators to manage tight pore pressure and fracture pressure margins, mitigate drilling risks in problematic zones, and extend drilling intervals more effectively. The application of these methods contributes to reduced non-productive time (NPT), lower operational risk, improved wellbore stability, and enhanced cost efficiency. In addition, optimizing drilling performance through these technologies supports more sustainable operations by reducing overall environmental impact and carbon footprint.

INSTRUCTOR

Dr. Behzad Elahifar

Dr. Behzad Elahifar accumulated 16 years of experience in drilling engineering, with both onshore and offshore operations across multiple regions, including the Middle East, North Sea, Barents Sea, Caspian Sea, Australia, and the Gulf of Mexico.

He has worked with NOV (National Oilwell Varco) as a Project Manager for Wired Drill Pipe and real-time communication systems, supporting operations in the North Sea and Barents Sea with Equinor and Lundin. He also served as a Project Manager and Managed Pressure Drilling (MPD) Engineer with Enhanced Drilling, where he gained extensive experience with Controlled Mud Level (CML) systems and MPD technologies for drilling and cementing operations on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, as well as in the Gulf of Mexico and the Caspian Sea.

His professional experience includes the following roles:

  • Associate Professor, NTNU – Department of Geoscience and Petroleum

  • Project Manager, NOV (National Oilwell Varco)

  • Project Manager / Drilling Engineer (MPD), Enhanced Drilling

  • Drilling Engineer, Advanced Drilling Solutions

  • Drilling Instructor / Researcher, Montanuniversität Leoben (University of Leoben)

  • Drilling Supervisor, NIOC (National Iranian Oil Company)

He combines academic expertise with extensive field and project management experience in advanced drilling technologies and well engineering operations.
