Fundamental Principles of Permanent Plug And Abandonment (DRL 309)

COURSE OVERVIEW

Every drilled well eventually reaches the end of its productive life, and its final stage is Permanent Plug and Abandonment (P&A). Permanent P&A involves restoring the cap rock—or its sealing functionality—to ensure long-term well integrity and environmental protection.

Achieving the objectives of permanent P&A requires a clear understanding of the reasons for abandonment and the scope of the required work. The industry is increasingly focusing on game-changing technologies driven by scientific and engineering innovation to improve efficiency, safety, and long-term reliability. Quality and safety remain paramount for both operating companies and regulatory authorities.

The aim of this course is to provide participants with the skills and knowledge needed to understand the fundamental principles of P&A. Topics include the technical basis of P&A operations, applicable rules and regulations, well abandonment phases, barrier verification methods, alternative barrier materials, emerging technologies, and the key challenges and opportunities in this field. The course also highlights the importance of considering P&A requirements during the well construction phase to ensure future abandonment can be conducted safely and effectively.
