COURSE OVERVIEW

The course provides participants with a comprehensive knowledge of Perforating and Energetics and their application in well construction and remediation. The course presents an introductory to advanced perforating knowledge and participants will learn how to determine the right perforation selection for most perforating applications in most well conditions.

This 3 day course designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of Perforating Operations and Technology. The course begins with an introduction to perforating technology, perforating safety and API standards to develop a consistent level of perforating background knowledge, also dispelling some industry wide misconceptions about perforating. Afterward, a wide range of perforating techniques, gun type selection, conveyance, gun dynamics, including overbalance, underbalance and dynamic underbalance, with examples of the software used by contractors for gun dynamic calculations will be reviewed. The focus will also be on well performance and developing an understanding of how different perforating techniques lead to different production outcomes, thru the use of flow modelling software. The new technology has entered the market in the last few years and how this can positively impact your well performance will also be discussed followed by an introduction to the use of cutters and severing tools, their capabilities/limitations. Use of Propellants in well stimulation both for primary and remedial production stimulation, includes how to select suitable candidates for propellant stimulation along with examples of propellant stimulations and modelling will be reviewed. The last day of course concentrates on the application of what has been learned with group work to present perforating proposals to the group audience for a range of perforating scenarios, which can include custom scenarios brought by the course attendees.

INSTRUCTOR

Mark Brinsden

Mark Brinsden is President and founder of Vektor Energy Inc. a technology consultancy. He has held several positions since he first joined the industry 39 years ago with Schlumberger, followed by Prodrill and Expro Group. After leaving Shell in 2018, where he was the Principal Technical Expert in Perforating for 12 years, he founded Vektor Energy Inc. to progress his passion for technology, especially in the areas of energetics for enhanced production and well integrity. He has invented several perforating gun systems, and is currently working on applied energetics for well control and well integrity. He is also currently developing expert systems for a major NOC’s. He was elected Fellow of The Energy Institute in 2015 and elected Distinguished Member of the SPE in 2019. He is an SPE Technical Editor and Associate Editor of SPE Drilling & Completions Journal. Mark was Chair of the SPE Energy Information Committee and is a member of both the SPE Completions Advisory Committee and SPE Distinguished Lecturer Selection Committee. He was on the Aberdeen Section Board from 2013 to 2017. He also made an SPE Distinguished Lecturer tour in 2013/14. He is an active SPE Mentor for the last 5 years and has presented numerous papers at conferences. He also provides Perforating Training courses for SPE conferences.
