COURSE OVERVIEW

This course teaches the physics of granular media. Understanding how grains behave will help you understand how sand control works, and how it unexpectedly fails. Participants will learn why grain size distribution is the key parameter in sand management, and how current measurement techniques are misleading. The course will look at how we currently display and analyse the grain size distribution. Systematic errors in grain size estimation and their impact of effectiveness will be covered in detail. Attendees will learn new techniques to improve their elicitation of these distributions and go even further with the physics and show how the produced sand and retained permeability can be derived from an accurate grain size distribution.

INSTRUCTOR

Instructor Profile

The instructor is Chief Mathematician at Industry Mathematics and Physics Ltd and was previously Chair Professor in Petroleum Engineering at Universiti Teknologi Brunei, and leading the Sand Screen Retention Test research project funded by Brunei Shell Petroleum. Before moving to Brunei, he was the Chair of Subsurface Modeling at the Centre for Coal Seam Gas and Director of the Centre for Geoscience Computing in the School of Earth Sciences at The University of Queensland. He worked in reservoir characterization and modeling in the oil industry for more than 30 years in both conventional and unconventional reservoirs before moving to academia in 2013. His current research interests are in the development of low-cost high-precision measurement techniques for brownfield assets, model validation, verification and acceptance criteria for both static and dynamic models, uncertainty modeling and non-linear spatial statistics. He has been a Chartered Mathematician since 1998 and continues to supervise research students at the University of New South Wales as an honorary professor.
